10 Meritorious Deeds Practice Retreat
I. What Are the "Ten Meritorious Deeds"?
The Ten Meritorious Deeds (Dasa Puñña-kiriya-vatthu) are ten wholesome actions taught by the Buddha for accumulating merit and purifying the mind:
🙏 Giving (Dāna) — Learning to let go, cultivating generosity
🙏 Virtue (Sīla) — Taking precepts as the guide, purifying body and speech
🙏 Meditation (Bhāvanā) — Practicing tranquility and insight, purifying the mind
🙏 Reverence (Apacāyana) — Respecting the Triple Gem, remaining humble
🙏 Service (Veyyāvacca) — Supporting with action, giving selflessly
🙏 Rejoicing in Merit (Pattānumodana) — Rejoicing in others' good deeds, overcoming jealousy
🙏 Transference of Merit (Pattidāna) — Sharing merits with all beings
🙏 Listening to Dhamma (Dhammassavana) — Feeding on the Dhamma, nurturing wisdom
🙏 Teaching Dhamma (Dhammadesanā) — Sharing the Dhamma, benefiting all
🙏 Straightening One's Views (Diṭṭhijukamma) — Cultivating right understanding, moving toward liberation
II. The Three Roots of the Ten Meritorious Deeds
The Ten Meritorious Deeds can be grouped into three core wholesome actions:
🌺 Giving (Dāna) — includes Rejoicing in Merit & Transference of Merit
🌸 Virtue (Sīla) — includes Reverence & Service
🌿 Meditation (Bhāvanā) — includes Listening to Dhamma, Teaching Dhamma & Straightening One's Views
Giving cultivates merit, virtue cultivates conduct, and meditation transforms the mind — three trainings in one, nurturing both merit and wisdom.
