【Meditation and Modern Life】
Modern society is in a phase of vigorous civilisational development. Although humanity possesses material wealth, spiritual civilisation continues to decline. Faced with mounting stress, anxiety, and chaotic lifestyles, people attempt to fill the void and dissatisfaction in their hearts through harmful habits such as smoking and alcohol abuse.
The anxiety brought about by an uncertain future gradually turns into restlessness; physical and mental illnesses are increasingly affecting younger individuals and becoming more widespread. In such an environment, people are beginning to recognise the need for mental cultivation, and thus turn to learning meditation in an effort to achieve spiritual fulfilment.
An increasing number of research studies have demonstrated the scientific basis of meditation and the positive changes it brings to the body and mind. Long-term or experienced meditators show stronger neural activation in certain frequently stimulated areas of the brain compared to ordinary individuals. However, researchers have discovered that the key to generating happiness is not purely the result of heightened neural activity, but rather the interaction between cognition and emotion.
Since neurons related to thinking and those related to emotions establish connections with one another, the more cognitive awareness there is, the greater the potential to regulate emotions.
The primary purpose of Buddhist meditation is to cultivate empathy and gain a deep understanding of the nature of reality — in other words, the union of compassion and wisdom. This aligns with what the scientific field refers to as the meditation mechanism — "the connection between cognition and emotion."
